Down under quilts have proven to be, without question, the preferred choice for insulating the underside of the hammock. Due to super light weight, compressibility and versatility, they outshine the alternatives by a landslide. Their thermal efficiency has allowed brave campers to push the boundaries of cold weather hammocking. Virtually every hammock camper has experienced - through his or her learning curve, the dreaded CBS, or "Cold Butt Syndrome". And virtually every owner of an under quilt has effectively learned how to avoid it. Once you have experienced a down under quilt, you will "never go back".

Hammock Gear provides a full-length under quilt - the Incubator, and a 3/4-length under quilt - the Phoenix. They are known by many to be the most effective on the market today. One of the primary reasons is this: the Incubator and Phoenix are the only commercial under quilts designed with a contour which mimics the shape a person makes when they are laying in a hammock. One of the added benefits of this construction technique is that it leaves a "flap" of fabric along the top and bottom of every down filled chamber. This extra fabric acts as a "floating baffle" which stabilizes the down and helps prevent its shifting. Another reason our UQ's are popular is this: they contain the ideal amount of down Stability - the down stays put when it should, but the design allows for enough manual shifting of down when necessary.

Orders placed on or after 7/13/20 will ship in approximately 10 Weeks.

All of our quilts ship with a 24" x 36" Storage Sack and Stuff Sack for backpacking.

About the Economy Phoenix

Our Economy Phoenix series utilizes downproof 1.1 oz / yd² (20D) Calendared Nylon Taffeta fabric and 800 fill power DWR Treated Grey Duck Down. The Economy Phoenix is the 'little brother' of the Economy Incubator, approximately 3/4 length. It's ideal for people who are pack size and weight conscious and want to shave those few extra ounces without sacrificing much in warmth or comfort. The Economy Phoenix helps you maximize every ounce by using goose down and with 9 differential baffles that run the length of the quilt, which helps keep the down from shifting, providing more warmth. (The baffles make this much warmer than similar quilts using "sewn-through" construction, allowing more loft).

The Economy Phoenix has a three dimensional, ergonomically shaped cut, which not only reduces weight, but provides a more secure wrap around the hammock, eliminating drafts. This underquilt (or UQ) is 3/4-length. This means it is designed to insulate you from your shoulders down to below your knees. Many hammoock campers will use a small piece of closed-cell-foam pad under their lower legs and feet since they typically require less insulation underneath to stay warm. The Economy Phoenix comes complete with our state of the art shock-cord suspension system, featuring color coded s-biners that help you to easily orient the head and foot end of the underquilt for a quick and effortless set-up. All of our quilts are shipped with a complimentary cotton storage sack, and a nylon stuff sack!

Duck Down

Hammock Gear is committed to providing down products that meet RDS (Responsible Down Standard).  RDS certifies that geese and ducks are treated ethically (no live plucking or force feeding) and the down is traceable back to the source.  Both our Premium and Economy quilts use down that meets the Responsible Down Standard. Great 3/4 Length Underquilt

Posted by Colin Runnion on 8th Jul 2020

Took this underquilt to Nantahala National Forest for 25mi of backpacking, where it reached 60F at night - I was never cold. This is my first hammocking backpacking trip, and with this underquilt being my first as well, I can say that it was easy to setup and felt great asymmetrically laying. It also stormed while on the trip at night, with high winds and torrential downpour for three hours, while it did get slightly wet, it never stopped keeping me warm.

I am glad I got the Phoenix, plenty long enough, super light and warm. Fits my hammock like a glove and stays in place. Glad I made the investment.

    Cozily Light

Posted by H Ngo on 19th Feb 2020

Replacing an identical 30F 3/4th length UQ that was lost during a bike trip....

However, this time around, for some reasons, the new UQ is longer (maybe by a couple inches), which is a bonus, not that I need it due to my petite size. In fact, I've used this 3/4 size UQ to regularly nap with my two nephews (4 and 2), and all three of us get ourselves cozy up rapidly, sleeping in our backyard during the winter time in our hammock. The boys can nap up to 3 hrs if undisturbed!!

As a petite (5') and side-fetus-position sleeper, being minimalist is a huge advantage because I adore the use this UQ as a blanket to "go to ground" during camping trips. The feather light (under 1 lb) and compactness are both convenient and a blessing to all my solo backpacking and bike packing trips.

One thing though, there's a little odd "duck smell" to this new quilt that I did not get with the old one that I can't seem to air out, but I guess as long as I don't put it up to my nose and get high, I think I'll be fine. After all, it's an UNderquilt. The funny smell would only be affected when I stuff it in the same sack as my top quilt.

Also, I requested to add an extra ounce of overfill for the new one, and the loft and warmth could be felt immediately. Worth the extra$!!

One thing for sure, I always get a little "giddy up" every time I get Hammock Gear crosses my mind due to their quality products and friendly approach to their transactions. Will look forward to purchase more from HG when my urges arise.

A must have for hammock sleeping!

Posted by Sam on 26th Sep 2019

I was skeptical about getting an under quilt for my hammock because I always thought they were similar to a sleeping bag or to be used with a sleeping bag for very cold weather camping. Boy was I wrong!

I only slept in a hammock a couple of times before first trying Hammock Gear's under quilt and I am so glad I tried it out! I'm 6 ft and the 3/4 length Economy Phoenix plus a down jacket at my feet kept me warm and cozy all trough the night.

I used this and the HG Economy Burrow top quilt during a 6 day backpacking trip in Glacier National Park, and I almost never needed to use the top quilt since the under quilt was doing such a good job at keeping me warm!

If you are on the fence on getting one, don't hesitate, your butt will thank you!

    Underquilt

Posted by Gabriel on 6th Sep 2019

I’m 5’6” and this underquilt almost covers my entire body! I’m a cold sleeper and this 20degree quilt was perfect for me in the high Sierra mountains with weather getting down to 40degrees. Great quality, great loft, and loved the way you can adjust this quilt.
