Hammock Gear Under Quilts

Frequently Asked Questions

Material Information

Down under quilts have proven to be, without question, the preferred choice for insulating the underside of the hammock. Due to the weight, compressibility and versatility, they outshine the alternatives by a landslide. Their thermal efficiency has allowed brave campers to push the boundaries of cold weather hammocking. Virtually every hammock camper has experienced - through his or her learning curve, the dreaded CBS, or "Cold Butt Syndrome". And virtually every owner of an under quilt has effectively learned how to avoid it. Once you have experienced a down under quilt, you will "never go back".

Hammock Gear provides a full-length under quilt - the Incubator Econ, and a 3/4-length under quilt - the Phoenix Econ. They are known by many to be the most effective on the market today. One of the primary reasons is this: the Incubator Econ and Phoenix Econ are the only commercial under quilts designed with a contour which mimics the shape a person makes when they are laying in a hammock. One of the added benefits of this construction technique is that it leaves a "flap" of fabric along the top and bottom of every down filled chamber. This extra fabric acts as a "floating baffle" which stabilizes the down and helps prevent its shifting. Another reason our UQ's are popular is this: they contain the ideal amount of down stability - the down stays put when it should, but the design allows for enough manual shifting of down when necessary.

Quilt orders placed on or after 6/27/19 have a lead time of approximately 1-2 weeks to ship.  Lead time is subject to change.

All of our quilts ship with a 24" x 36" Storage Sack and Stuff Sack for backpacking.

About the Economy Incubator

The ULTIMATE underquilt for guaranteed comfort at a low price... The Standard length Economy Incubator is long enough to generously cover most hammock campers up to about 6’ 1”.  Our Economy Incubator series utilizes downproof 1.1 oz / yd² (20D) Calendared Nylon Taffeta fabric and 800 fill power DWR Treated Grey Duck Down. This underquilt will protect you in temperatures down to its temperature rating. If you are looking for an underquilt that is hassle free and will allow you to enjoy your hammock for more months of the year, you have found it.

The Economy Incubator comes with 9 anatomically contoured, differential cut baffles that run the length of the quilt. One of the things this construction technique does is to greatly reduce the shifting of down that is sometimes more noticeable in quilts made with premium down.  This is one of the reasons Hammock Gear quilts are always 15-20% overstuffed. The differential cut, contoured baffles also provide the highest level of fit which is critical to keeping warm. The Economy Incubator comes complete with our state of the art shock-cord suspension system, featuring color coded s-biners that help you to easily orient the head and foot end of the underquilt for a quick and effortless set-up. All of our quilts are shipped with a complimentary cotton storage sack, and a nylon stuff sack!

Duck Down

Hammock Gear is committed to providing down products that meet RDS (Responsible Down Standard).  RDS certifies that geese and ducks are treated ethically (no live plucking or force feeding) and the down is traceable back to the source.  Both our Premium and Economy quilts use down that meets the Responsible Down Standard. Weight / Budget Friendly.

The economy incubator is great for a backpacker that sleeps hot. Got the 40 degree and it is PLENTY warm enough for any time of the year. If there was a higher temp I would have gone with that. Packs tight and light. Very easy to set up and adjust as necessary. I would pick this over all other underquilts on the market, especially for the price.

    Incubator underquilt

Posted by Samuel Schoonover on 23rd Aug 2019

This is my second underquilt from HG and it absolutly meets all my expectations for quality gear. This one is for my wife cause she loves my original one so much. I could go on about how well put together this item is but the proof is in the pudding. I now have two top quilts and two under quilts from HG and soon the kids will have their own as well. Could not be more pleased with this investment in my comfort on those cold winter hunt trips.

    Economy Incubator 40

Posted by Steve on 10th Jul 2019

I’ve been using the 40 degree economy incubator in northern MN this summer. It is amazingly warm and is working perfectly with a Darian Dream Hammock. It’s so nice I ordered the 40 degree burrow as well. And thanks to Harry in tech support for all the help, HG is awesome!

    Economy incubator

Posted by Unknown on 9th Jul 2019

I bought this product on a recommendation from a fellow hammocker. It did not disappoint. I haven’t used it in any really cold weather yet I bought the 20° incubator . Had no trouble sleeping in the temperatures in the high 30s. I would definitely recommend this product. The company also rush my order to make it in time for a trip

Highly recommended! Really great under quilts!

Posted by Andrzej on 3rd Jul 2019

HG under quilts are warm and comfortable. And they have a great suspension system - easy to hang and easy to adjust. I got 40F and 0F under quilts. So far (it's summer) I tested only 40F version together with my DIY hammock made of highly breathable fabric. Never slept better. I had to pay +25% because of import VAT and custom duties (I'm in Europe) but it was a great choice compare to local overpriced brands of doubtful quality.

And I'm very happy with HG service. I had a small technical problem with my order and also I asked them to change my order after the payment and the response was fast and very helpful.

    Economy Burrow and Incubator

Posted by Matt on 25th Jun 2019

I ordered an Economy Burrow and Economy Incubator and had a trip coming up in a couple weeks. They were able to get them done fast and shipped before my trip. They arrived in time for the trip and both are great! I would definitely recommend them.

So light, so warm, so adaptable

Posted by Stephen on 25th Jun 2019

I purchased the 30F Burrow and 10F Incubator for shoulder season hammock camping (and where I live, I only have winter and shoulder season, summer never comes). I love how adaptable they are. Even when using the Burrow indoors it is easy to configure so that it doesn't overheat. I've been plenty warm into the 30's and can't wait to try this setup into the teens (supplementing the Burrow with a puffy jacket and tightening up everything on the Incubator).

Warm nights, easy to setup once you figure it out!

Posted by Dave M on 24th Jun 2019

Really happy with my purchase so far. Sleeping like a baby at night despite the Temps dropping into the 40's/30's.

A bit confusing at first, but pretty simple once you get the hang of adjusting it.
