The Incubator: Your Full-Length Hammock Underquilt

The Incubator is a full-length down underquilt made for hammock camping. It hangs beneath your hammock to insulate the one spot a top quilt cannot. After all, your body crushes the insulation you lie on, so it stops working. Instead, the Incubator wraps warmth around you from below. It runs from your shoulders to your heels for true full-length coverage. As a result, you stay warm on cold nights without adding bulk to your pack.

Why a Hammock Needs an Underquilt

In a hammock, your body weight compresses a sleeping bag flat. Therefore, it loses most of its insulating power. An underquilt solves this by hanging outside the hammock. As a result, the down stays lofted and full of warm air. Meanwhile, you sleep on an uncrushed, evenly warm surface. So a quality underquilt is the key to cold-weather hanging.

Contoured for a Gap-Free Fit

The Incubator uses a contoured shape that hugs the curve of your body. Because of this, it closes the cold gaps that flat quilts leave behind. An adjustable secondary suspension lets you tune the fit to your lay. You can even set it asymmetrically to match your hammock and sleeping angle. In addition, draft collars at both ends seal in heat or vent it. Therefore, you control your warmth as the temperature changes overnight.

Premium 850-Fill Down and Tough Fabric

We fill every Incubator with ethically sourced 850-fill-power down. As a result, it delivers a high warmth-to-weight ratio. Choose a 7-, 10-, or 20-denier ripstop shell to suit your trip. A DWR coating also helps the fabric resist damp, foggy conditions. This ultralight underquilt then packs the warmth you need into very little weight.

Customize Your Incubator

We build every Incubator to order around your body and your climate. First, choose a temperature rating from a mild 40°F to a frosty 0°F. Then, pick a length in short, standard, or long to match your height. For colder trips, you can add extra down overfill for more warmth. You can also pair it with the Burrow top quilt and the Circadian Pro hammock for a complete system. As a result, your sleep system fits exactly how and where you camp.

Pack the Incubator Down and Go

When it is time to move, the Incubator compresses down small. For example, a 40°F model stuffs to roughly 4.5 liters. A warmer 20°F version packs to about 8.5 liters. Therefore, it disappears into your pack with room to spare. A matching silpoly stuff sack keeps it compressed and protected. We proudly build it in the USA. Finally, follow Leave No Trace principles and read REI on down fill power before your next trip.

I recently used the Sea to Summit 5-degree Spark down sleeping bag alongside my new Incubator UL under quilt during a night where temperatures dropped to 28°F. To my surprise, I was so warm that I woke up sweating around 2 AM. I am impressed with the exceptional warmth and quality of the under quilt and have confidently recommended it to my fellow hammock enthusiasts.

Bought the 20° Incubator in woodland camo. This thing is wicked! In cold temps, you almost immediately feel your underside get warm on contact. It's unlike any hammock pad or quilt I've owned. This has completely opened up my options for cold weather hikes. I am beyond impressed! Get the overfill, I'd say 2oz to ensure the down stays put ;)

Im an avid hammock backpacker with at least a years cumulative experience in the Blue Ridge of Virginia through all seasons and weather conditions. My biggest problem: the tunnel that forms on the foot end of the hammock that is against my left leg. This results from the load path through the fabric, is always present to some degree in a gathered-end hammock, and is also known as calf ridge and can cause discomfort in some cases. In my case there is no discomfort at all, but its a common cold-spot as traditional under quilts cant follow the shape of that tunnel and can slightly pull away, opening a gap and making my left leg cold. I own 2 Incubators, 40 and 20-degree, both 10D fabric and 950 fill. Theyre fantastic. Case in point: upon receiving my 20-deg quilt I immediately took it out into the mountains for 2 nights with temps in the low-mid 30s. It took ZERO FIDDLING to have it dialed. No gaps. No cold spots. I attribute this to: 1) reduced weight of the foot end prevents any saggingcontributory factors include the lightweight fabric, reduced down requirement with 950 fill power, and the tapered foot end width. Also, the incubator shape follows the natural curve of the hammock loaded with a person in it, which I believe also reduces the chance of cold spots (you can see this in the picturethe hammock isnt loaded but you can clearly see the shape). Note that Im a side sleeper and was concerned that this design feature might creat gaps and cold spots, but I had zero issues. Bottom line: as long as I adjust my hammock hang such that my leg is off of that calf ridge tunnel, my incubators pull tightly up against me and keep me warm regardless of body position. These are fantastic pieces of gear, perfectly sewn, and the crew at HG was very easy to work with. These are my new favorite quilts (of many).

I have both a 40* and a 20* Hammock Gear UQ. I decided I needed something in between because the 20* is too heavy for more mild temperatures. So, I purchased this 30* UQ. I recently took it out for two nights on the trail. The first night the temp got down to 31F. I developed some cold spots during the night. On the second night I worked with the quilt bit more by cinching up the drawstrings. That night it dropped to 30F and I stayed warm! Since I get cold easily, I have the sense that I wouldn't want to take it much below 30F (just like I wouldn't want to take my 40* quilt much below 40). I am very happy with this quilt. I love the color and weight. It did exactly what I wanted it to do!

Took it for a spin in 2C/35F weather, I was HOT with a -4C comfort bag, can't wait for colder weather. You don't even need a compression sack by the way, it squashes down quite well with the normal storage sack.

    Warmth That Hangs with You

Ive been using the Incubator underquilt and its been a total game changer for my hammock camping. It kept me warm on cold Idaho nights, even when temps dropped below freezing, and it packs down surprisingly small for how warm it is. Setup took a little trial and error, but once I got it dialed in, it fit my hammock perfectly and stayed put all night. If youre looking for serious warmth, comfort, and quality in your hammock setup, this quilt is totally worth it. Also I can’t stress enough, dial it in before you go. And don’t be afraid to use the eyelet rings on the uq to form a good fit.
